Block printing in Jaipur goes back centuries and it's a process that I fell in love with on my first visit to the bustling city of Jaipur 10 years ago. Watching designs being meticulously hand carved into wooden blocks is incredible and it's why I knew that I wanted to use this incredible skill when designing the first batch of tablecloths and napkins for The Supper House.
// The Process //
It all starts with a watercolour drawing of the design that I create at home in the UK. Next the carver creates a detailed outline for the blocks that they will carve out by hand. Each colour requires its own block. The carving process alone can take weeks depending on the intricacy of the design. When they are finished, the team of block printers mix the colours and take some time to practice with the new blocks, learning where to carefully line up each pattern before printing huge lengths of cotton. It's a hugely labour intensive process that requires skill and precision.
The craftmanship involved in this beautifully slow process is why I fell in love with block printing. I believe that block printed tablecloths and napkins are perfect for adding another layer of authentic design to your table and are a perfect gift for those who love to entertain.
